C 2M1 is about the history of coded languages, from Morse code to SMS… about the shared desire to communicate and transmit everything, from the myth of the Tower of Babel to automatic translation, to speech robots, and the need to secure everything through cryptology. C2M1 looks at our relationship with language, and more specifically, what technologies do to language.
Recording at Centre des d’art d’Enghein les Bains
Description
The 2 performers, Siegfried Canto and Magali Desbazeille, activate a laboratory full of an assortment of elements: they play with images, sounds and low tech accessories like a jig saw, a sewing machine, a Morse key, a “Speak and Spell”. The stage fills up gradually until it becomes saturated with sounds and images.
C2M1 also looks at the intrinsically human need to communicate and the impact that need has on the environment: to satisfy that need, numerous satellites have collided, filling outer space with millions of bits of debris… which transform into millions of voice chips on stage …

TEXTS, DRAMATURGY:
The text was written using three types of material: interviews by the authors with professionals and researchers, extracts from various archives, personal texts. The heterogeneous basis of the project questions the nature of its text: how are documentary elements perceived and received when they are displaced and put on stage? Where is the limit between documentary and fiction?
Interviews were carried out with a linguist, a medievalist in French spelling, a natural language processing researcher, a statistician, an editorial secretary, an interpreter-translator, a researcher on speech robots, a cryptanalyst, a priest and a rabbi.
Interviews with: Romain Alléaume, Susan Baddeley, Olivier Baude, Louise-Amélie Cougnon, Philippe Desgens, Xavier Dupré, Eric Heilman, Delphine Horvilleur, Philippe Monneret, Pierre-Yves Oudeyer, Maura Pollin, François Yvon, Juliette Zumbiel.
